The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) has transformed how we think about transportation and energy consumption. With more homeowners opting to install EV chargers, it is crucial to understand the electrical prerequisites. Setting up an EV charger requires careful planning and adherence to specific electrical standards. Power Supply

The power supply must be powerful enough to accommodate the EV charger’s capacity. While most home chargers operate around 7kW, drivers with higher usage or a need for quicker charging may want to consider a more powerful charger. A 22kW charger, which is among the fastest available for residential use, requires a three-phase power supply—something that’s not typically standard in most homes. Achieving this level of charging speed requires a charge point compatible with three-phase power and a high amperage supply. Before installation, your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) may need to inspect and potentially upgrade your power supply to meet these demands.

Charging Equipment

For home use, Level 1 and Level 2 EV chargers are the most suitable options. In the UK, a Level 2 charger connects to a 240-volt outlet, similar to those used by high-power appliances like electric cookers or tumble dryers, making it easier to incorporate into homes with existing 240-volt outlets. In contrast, a Level 1 charger typically uses a 120-volt AC plug, which is the same type used for standard household electronics, like laptops and lamps.

Level 1 chargers, though slower, can be effective for moderate daily charging needs. For instance, they can recharge an EV overnight for shorter commutes of around 40 miles, although a full charge may take up to 24 hours.

Upstands for EV charge points are permitted, but there is a restriction of one upstand per parking space, and they must not exceed 1.6 metres in height to comply with installation standards.
